An 81-year-old woman presented with chronic abdominal pain in the epigastrium and right hypochondrium, associated with weight loss and an abdominal tumor. A CT scan revealed a polycystic liver with a massive hepatic cyst in the right lobe (fig. 1). Surgical exploration identified the gallbladder surrounded by the thick serosal layer of a hepatic cyst (fig. 2). Effects of Surgical Methods and Tumor Location on Survival and Recurrence Patterns after Curative Resection in Patients with T2 Gallbladder Cancer

BACKGROUND/AIMS Extended cholecystectomy is generally recommended for patients with T2 gallbladder cancer. This study analyzed the effects of surgical methods and tumor location on survival outcomes and tumor recurrence in patients with T2 gallbladder cancer. METHODS Clinicopathological chara...

Gallbladder-associated symptomatic hepatic choristoma: Should you resect?

INTRODUCTION Hepatic choristomas or ectopic livers are uncommon, and occur due to a failure of embryological liver development. They pose a risk of carcinogenesis, with transformation to hepatocellular carcinoma (HCC) being described in the literature (Arakawa et al., 1999). It is often a silent clinical finding that can occur anywhere in the body and is usually diagnosed incidentally during ab...

A Case of Primary Neuroendocrine Carcinoma of the Gallbladder Associated with Anomalous Union of the Pancreaticobiliary Duct

Primary neuroendocrine carcinoma of the gallbladder is extremely rare because normal gallbladder mucosa does not contain neuroendocrine cells. Neuroendocrine cells can be detected at sites of intestinal metaplasia induced by chronic inflammation, which may be the initial step in the development of neuroendocrine tumor of the gallbladder. Anomalous union of the pancreaticobiliary duct (AUPBD) is...
